Dubinky’s Granfalloon was a student club at East High School in Salt Lake City, Utah, active from 1977 to 1979. The name combined “Dubinky,”
an early settler in the Moab, Utah, area, with “granfalloon,” Kurt Vonnegut’s term for a group of people who affect a shared identity or
purpose, but whose mutual association is meaningless. The club name was originally misspelled “Dubinkey’s Granfalloon,” and that misspelling
became part of the club’s history. Biannual meetings were held at a remote desert site near Dubinky Well Road outside Moab. Dubinky’s Granfalloon
Press is named after the club. During the first trip, club members were arrested by Ranger Jim Stiles, a confidant of Edward Abbey, instantly
elevating a questionable high school club into Southern Utah desert history.
Stiles later published The Canyon Country Zephyr and wrote about the event.
